New Beginnings 2016

When I was first married, I was serving in the Young Women's program for several years.  I was able to write skits for 3 or 4 New Beginnings. This year finds me back in the YW Program. I suggested to the YW presidency that we have a Rock Climbing theme for our New Beginnings.  This afternoon, I wrote this skit for it. (Too bad I will be out of town when it occurs.) It uses the words and scriptures from the Personal Progress booklet.  It's going to be a grand way to remember the importance of having these eight values in our lives...as teenage girls...as newly wed women, middle aged women, or elderly sisters....

Reaching the Summit
New Beginnings Skit
Lake Orion Ward
1/16/2016
Dawn Mercedes Barrett

Scene: A mountain on the white board.  Brenna with a backpack.  Each person along the path will have a “hello, my name is” sticker with their character name on it…and perhaps a prop.

Narrator:  Set the scene: Brenna is a 12 year old…going on an excursion to get to the top of a high summit.  Will she make it? How will she get to the top?  Who will she meet along her way?  What will happen once she gets there?

(**After each character says their part, they hand Brenna a flag with a value on it. Brenna adds it to the mountain on the board.)

Brenna:  Hi! I’m off for an adventure now that I am not a little kid any more.  See that mountain over there? I want to get to the top.  (In walks Brenna’s Parents.)

Brenna’s Dad:  (Holding Scriptures) Sweetheart, getting to the top of that mountain is going to take time and patience and faith.  You won’t know exactly what obstacles you might encounter.  In the Book of Mormon, Alma said “Faith is not to have a perfect knowledge of things; therefore, if ye have faith ye hope for things which are not seen, which are true.”   Brenna, you are a daughter of Heavenly Father, who loves you.  You must have faith in his eternal plan, which centers on the Savior, Jesus Christ.

Brenna’s Mom:  (wearing an apron)   Remember! You have divine qualities from your Heavenly Parents.  While on this journey, take time to develop these traits and share them with those along the path that you come in contact with. Remember what the apostle Peter taught the saints in the early Church:

“Be partakers of the divine nature. … Giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; and to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; and to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity” (2 Peter 1:4–7).

Holy Ghost
Delivery girl walking by with a messenger bag:
Special Delivery for Miss Brenna!!
Special Delivery for Miss Brenna!!

Brenna:  I’m Brenna!
Opens the padded envelope, takes out the banner and reads the accompanying letter aloud:
“To Miss Brenna
From the Holy Ghost
As you have been baptized and live righteously, I am here for you, always.  I am here to teach you truths and guide you on your path.
Remember the worth of souls is great in the sight of God (D&C 18:10).  Brenna, you are of infinite worth with your own very special, divine mission.   I can be your constant companion as you strive to fulfill your mission in life.”

Brenna’s Beehive Teacher: (Carrying a church bag)
“It is so nice to travel with you for a portion of your journey, Brenna!  I enjoy the time we have in class as we seek opportunities for learning and growth.  As you progress toward the summit, you will be able to learn about the gospel and spiritual things. Also, study from the best books to learn about the earth of of men.  Remember what the Lord revealed to Joseph Smith in D&C 88:118:
Seek learning, even by study and also by faith.”

Brenna’s YW President:  (Chunky jewelry)
“Brenna, every day you will have to decide what path to take on your journey.  Will you go left? Will you go right? Will you read your scriptures? Will you waste your time?  Will you be kind? Just what path will you choose?  Remember that you are responsible for the consequences of your choices.  So it is very important to choose good over evil, always.  Some of the best advice I can give you, is what Joshua gave to the Children of Israel:
Choose you this day whom ye will serve; … but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord (Joshua 24:15).”  I have faith in you Brenna! Keep pressing forward to the summit!

Brenna’s RS President:  (In a skirt)
Welcome, Brenna!!  (Put her arms around her shoulder.)  We are so glad to see you working hard to progress to the summit of that mountain!  As sisters in Zion, we help others and build the kingdom through righteous acts of service to those around us and those far away.  Remember, Jesus Christ served others when he walked among men on earth.  To the Nephites after his Resurrection he counseled:
“Therefore let your light so shine before this people, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father who is in heaven (3 Nephi 12:16).”  We can be the Lord’s hands as we serve and lift one another on our path to the summit of the mountain. Keep up the good work!

Brenna:  Whew…I’m getting tired. I think I’ll sit down for a moment to listen to General Conference. Pantomime’s turning on the tv.
Prophet walks in:   (wears a tie holding a For The Strength Of Youth Pamphet…possibly in a tv box?)  We live in a world where people are confused. If you don’t believe me, just turn on the news.  Now is the time to stand up and have the moral courage to make your actions consistent with your knowledge of right and wrong. You have been blessed with the gospel in your life. Now, as you journey on, stand up for truth and righteousness. Don’t be afraid to speak up.  Remember what Job declared in the Old Testament, even when he was going through so many earthly trials…
“Till I die I will not remove mine integrity from me (Job 27:5).”

Brenna’s Bishop:  (In a tie)
You are almost to the summit of the mountain, Brenna.  You have learned through your travels to continually learn about yourself and the world around you.  You have served the Lord as you helped others. You have showed the Lord of your love for Him as you kept the commandments.  You have kept your thoughts and actions clean and pure. You are ready to worthily enter the temple.
“Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies (Proverbs 31:10).”

Hands her the Virtue Banner to add to the mountain.

Brenna:  I made it! I made it to the top! YES!!
Brenna’s Bishop: Yes Brenna, you made it to the summit!  The Mountain of the Lord. The House of the Lord.  The Temple.  (Adds a picture of the temple to the top of the mountain.)  As you go in and make covenants with the Lord, remember, this is just the half way point of your earthly journey.  Mountain climbers know that the summit is not the end goal…the descent is the actual goal.  At times, it can be trickier than the climb up.    You are half way to your celestial home.    You must use all those values and apply them to your life, each day, as you endure to the end and return to your Heavenly Home with your Heavenly Parents.

Narrator:  Each of us is just like Brenna. We have been taught by parents, teachers, leaders, the Holy Ghost and prophets about the plan of Salvation.  We know the Plan of Salvation and Personal Progress helps us to remember the values that we must have to be able to reach the summit…to enter the House of the Lord to make sacred Covenants.   Just as Brenna’s Bishop has reminded us. That is not the end of our earthly journey. Once we attend the temple, we must return regularly.  We must press forward, feasting on the words of Christ as we lovingly help others to reach that summit of the temple too.   Whether going up the mountain, or coming back down, the values of the Personal Progress program will help us be able to return our Heavenly Home.

Combined Mutual Night

Tonight, my Beehives and I were in charge of the combined YM/YW activity at church.  One of my Beehives suggested doing an acting night...and that started the ball rolling.
I'm so grateful for inspiration!
After wrestling with how to make this work well in our situation and with our time contraint, I figured out that the best way to do this was to
Modernize Parables!

And thus...
Five Minute Theater was in production!

Our class president prepared these handouts
for the YM and YW that were passed out last Sunday.

Everyone was asked to bring in a box of their favorite theater candy...
and their smart phone if they wanted to record the event "for posterity."

Setting up the candy buffet.
I got popcorn bags from The Dollar Tree for the popcorn and sweets!

A Beehive introduced the night...and read
1 Nephi 19:23 And I did read many things unto them which were written in the books of Moses; but that I might more fully persuade them to believe in the Lord their Redeemer I did read unto them that which was written by the prophet Isaiah; for I did liken all scriptures unto us, that it might be for our profit and learning.

I reiterated the commandment that we are to liken the scriptures to our lives...
our lives now, in 2015.
The youth got into groups and pulled a paper out of my hand to see what parable they would modernize.  I had more than enough of the parables printed off so that groups could call what they wanted or change out unwanted ones.

After 15-20 minutes of brainstorming,
they scooped up  popcorn and candies...and
sat back down to watch the 5 (or longer) Minute Theater productions!

Honestly, I detest taking pictures...I'd rather just enjoy the fun of what is happening around me.
But, our YW President was out of town and asked me to photodocument the evening. You get what you get and you don't throw a fit! haha

And the first skit, which was "Parable of the Sower" had the most kids in it...and I was videoing it...no still pix.  My son C* was in that skit...and took the videos of the rest so I could snap pix.

In between skits, this is what our boys do to stretch out!

The Prodigal...er...Daughter!!

The Good Samaritan...from Romeo...rescuing the injured one from...Rochester.  Here are the thugs from Rochester. The boys in the back are "trees."

The Parable of the Foolish Rich Man...done with a Monty Python Flare.

Yep...the little horde of deacons got the 10 Virgins...luck of the draw.
Here they twisted it to be the 10 Boy Scouts!

What an incredibly fun night!  All in all, we had well over 30 youth in attendance.
While I am still not used to leaders and youth talking through everyone else...
and I may never get used to that...
I am so very pleased by the energy and effort and excitement everyone put into their
modernizing of the parables.  As Neil A. Maxwell said:  “May we then do . . . what Nephi did when studying the scriptures, namely, to ‘liken all scriptures’ unto ourselves (1 Nephi 19:23). This is something that doesn’t happen often enough in the Church. We read the scriptures, but often we do not ‘liken’ them.”

I am so grateful for this calling to stretch my mind...to serve, to uplift and include, to stay busy and helpful...and become more intuned with the Spirit.  And grateful for that one Beehive who said "let's do acting."

See where it ended!
Beehives are the BEST!!

Something new to do!

LDS Young Women Organization Logo - Torch with Text.jpg

About a month ago, I was asked to serve in the Young Women's Organization at church.  The Young Women are the girls who are ages 12-18 years old. What a time in a girl's life! And I'm so excited to be a part of this little group as they grow and learn and make choices that may impact them for a lifetime.  Specificially, I work with the Beehives...the girls who are 12-13 years old.  Though I will be with all of them each month too!

Last Wednesday night was the first time I was planning an activity for the Beehives. I wanted it to be fun but help the along with their Personal Progress.  It was also my daughter A*'s last week with the Beehive class as she was turning 14 and moving up with the Mia Maids. I asked her what she night like to do as there was nothing planned from the previous leader. She said "Hair stuff."  Oh boy!

As I thought about it, I knew that some girls would love fluffy things in their hair while others would detest it!  (My DD being one of those who detested it! haha) So...after thinking and searching, I came up with an activity that would help us learn more about the importance of having the Holy Ghost as a constant companion, get a goal checked off, and have some fun making hair pins!!

You can make colored bobby pins by using nail polish.  I asked each girl to bring their favorite color of polish if they had colors that matches outfits/favorite colors. I also brough my stash of  colorful polish!

We reviewed the Value Experience for Virtue #2.  (Which also tied in to the lesson last Sunday.)  I reminded them that when we are virtuous we can have the constant companionship of the Holy Ghost.  The Holy Ghost is a gift we receive after we are baptized.  We all like gifts..and I have a gift for you!  Then each girl was given a package of bobby pins. Then, as they painted and glitterfied their bobby pins, each girl in turn read one of the assigned scripture verses listed in that experience.  Lucky for us, we had six girls and six scriptures to read.  As the girl would tell us the blessing for having the Holy Ghost in their life based on the scripture she read, I wrote a list on the board.

If your polish is dark, try painting a layer of white before the color.
It will pop!!

The girls got a kick out of designing their own hair baubles!
After we had read all the verses, I asked the girls to take look at the list of blessings.
I asked them, "Which of these blessings would YOU like in your own life during the next 12 months?
Of course we want all the blessings we can get. But some of these might be more important to you at this time of your life."
Then we went around and each girl chose for herself a reason why she
needed the Holy Ghost as her constant companion...now.

Most picked...increased  confidence.
Now, what 12 or 13 year old...or even 41 year old doesn't want increased confidence...
to know what you are doing is on the right track!

Typically, our meetings start late, end early...
But Wednesday, the girls didn't want to stop painting.
We chatted about what fun thing we will remember from this last summer...
what we are looking forward to in this next school year...
and again...how and why we want the Holy Ghost in our lives.
Now, all that was left for them to finish this experience was to write in their journals
about what they had learned and about a time they felt the guidance of the Holy Ghost.  By Sunday, 3 out of the 6 had already done so!

This Wednesday...JEWERLY...
But of course, there will be a twist to it!

I'm a foodie

Yes, I must be a foodie. haha

Although I should not be..but I am.

I have the BEST friends and family...who know we are foodies.  Years ago, C* had a scrawny friend who picked and pushed his food around during dinners.  I know his parents just bugged and hollered and fussed to get him to eat, but he refused. I explained to my kids that we live to eat...Gresha ate to live.  There is a difference.

Food can be oh so comforting...and something to do when there is little else you can do for someone. Why else do we bring food to  a family who has lost a loved one.  Or have parties with food to celebrate graduations.  Fuss over the choice in wedding cakes.  Why...most of us, at some time or another, are foodies.

Monday, after C*'s surgery, he was pretty eager to move about.  My mom suggested that it was the adrenline. I could hardly keep the boy still.  I was a bit tired and sore for my own reasons...and was starting dinner.  Even though I'm a foodie, making dinner isn't what I enjoy doing. haha.  So, relunctantly, I got off the phone with Jenn, my phone bestie...who lives in Colorado...and she said she'd take care of dessert.  I smiled...and wondered what she had up her sleeve. But dinner needed to be done...and C* was STARVING. No, he did not eat soft foods all day on Monday...he was HUNGRY...he had steak...heavy oriental pepper steak with lots of sticky rice!  I digress...

So, the door bell rings, it's a delivery guy with an Edible Bouquet for Connor (et all).

Only I do believe we all two pieces...Connor got 4. haha.

After the squeals and thrills...I went back to making dinner...and
Lo and behold another visitor!

The best cupcake chef I know, aka my neighbor, dropped off these five triple chocolate with
homemade chocolate ganash drizzled on top...cupcakes.

Boy, what a feast we had. More than that, we were cheered to know that C* was loved and cherished.
Yesterday, he came home from the church youth activity. A leaders and one other boy had brought him
some home made treats to enjoy while he was recuporating.

Today, I took A* out shopping for a couple of items...as a way to get her out of the house b/c I knew a Young Women surprise was coming.  But, we had a surprise ourselves!
My generous mom and dad ordered an XL Jet pizza...with lots of toppings...

JUST BECAUSE THEY LOVE US!

What a treat...what a surprise!

This is all that is left of it..and Ken hasn't even hit it yet!

Here is the door...decorated and bee-noted with a warm welcome from all
of the fun Beehives in her new class.

And ...

Sitting on her desk was this rice crispy beehive to eat!

Thanks everyone!!  We are well fed and well loved this week!
