Spring Fairy Day, maybe

Someone on the PMS forum of PCP announced earlier this week that March 22nd was Spring Fairy Day. Tonight, I made 3 fairy nice cards for the occasion...using some of my favorite stamp company's stamps.

First...Paper Makeup Stamps' Sprout Fairy. Perfect for Spring and Earth Day!

The sentiment reads:

Just sitting quietly,

doing nothing,

Spring comes,

and the grass grows by itself.

Zenrin poem

Then, I got out my Starving Artistamps and DF Mimo was turned into a reluctant fairy by adding the wings of the dragon...stickles dust the wings while Crystal Effects bug out his eyes!

Lastly, a Hello Fairy...out of a Helly Kitty sizzix die. I used the polka dot ribbon to transform her into a fairy.

Of course, I googled to confirm this fairy date...and had no luck finding a site that stated it was Spring Fairy Day. Ah well...it's just silly and fun. Cards to cheer people up.

Amazing discovery...

Today, I noticed our very industrious (and 8 months pregnant) neighbors were busily tending their flower beds, bushes and "park." Our houses back to a wooded, at times swampy, "park." Most call it a wetlands...but officially, it's still a park. So, of course, we started sprucing up our side of the woods. As we helped move some logs for Mr. D, I thought it might be nice to have a clearing for the boys to ramble in so that was done. Picked up trash...found a sprinkler head...more garbage...(where did that sprinkler head come from?)...a broken up bird house...more garbage. More cleaning up/talking with the neighbors.

Then it hit me!

That wasn't a bird house, it was an old fairy house!!

So McK* and B*, the neighbor girl, ran up to the garage to rescue it from the garbage bag. Ken kindly nailed it back together and then onto a tree. The kids gathered stones which have been arranaged several times already.

M* finding the exact spot the house is supposed to be!

Scouting for rocks!

Dad helping by erecting the fairy house.

Fairy house!

Arranging and Rearranging rocks and stones for the new tenants.

A very happy McK hanging out in a woodland fairy paradise.
E* hamming it up...or being a troll...
Considering that he was the most helpful today, he's hamming it up AND we're having his favorite food for dinner tonight...Hawaiian Haystacks!

I can hardly wait for the fairies to move in. I bet they will rearrange those rocks since they are on the large size. McK says they will be able to "fly up" to the opening. Also she wants us to post a sign on our roof saying that there was an available fairy house on our property. I assured her that the animals would tell any wandering woodland fairy about the home. All these years...and a fairy house abandoned!

Fairy Breaking News...

C* just came to the door and said something to me, undistinguishable. B/c he mutters a lot when he talks. But what I did catch was the fact that he called ME the "tooth fairy." This morning, he said that the tooth fairy didn't come. I said, "Tooth fairy? I guess you stayed up too late watching the Star Wars movie with Dad. So the tooth fairy couldn't get your tooth."

Well, this evening, he's telling me that "he knows" I'm the tooth fairy. And last night was "his little test." His tooth fell out during school and he didn't tell me. Boy, it's a little hard to admit, yes I'm the tooth fairy. So I asked, "Do you want me to be the tooth fairy?" "Yes."

So I'm the tooth fairy. Then he says, "And, you are the pokemon fairy." Well, okay...the fairy talk...You have to believe or the fairies stop coming. And if you tell your brother or sister, the fairies STOP coming.

I'm still not sure what M* and C* understand about Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny. I am leary b/c of what happened over 25 years ago. My sister Cara learned about Santa.

So, I figured that meant that she knew about the Easter Bunny...right? (Come on now. If you are the tooth fairy, you gotta be the Pokemon fairy...oh wait...we really did have a Pokemon fairy, not me...who mailed the kids candy and cards when I was on vacation. hehe.) Back to my childhood story...so I said something about the Easter Bunny being mom and dad (can't remember what)...AND CARA DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT THE EASTER BUNNY! I felt to incredibly aweful!

As my kids ask and figure these mythical childhood events, I tread carefully...

and hope that they can play along with me!

PS>...M* still needs a fairy door!

Urban Fairies

For those who are now interested in fairy doors:

http://www.urban-fairies.com/

is the best site...esp. for fairies naitive to Ann Arbor, MI. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click on the various locations. There is even one at the Google Building in Ann Arbor. Wow!

Fairy Doors

Barb wanted some links for fairy doors. Interestingly enough, someone who looks to be an expert with this phenomenom posted a comment yesterday to my blog. Although his blog, U.F.O (the urban fairies operations), hasn't been updated in a while, it looks as if there is a bunch of info. He seems to be a published author too...so I'll have to see if I can find the book.

I just typed fairy doors into the google search engine. (Ooh, I was just at Michael's and forgot to look for doors! doh!) I also PMed my good fairy lover, or rather faerey lover, Jessica of Faerey Wings and Stamping Things. And SHE didn't know about them either. So I don't feel so bad.

It's dreadfully cold out there today....why didn't I remember to look for the doors! I was even walking around a bit b/c I had to go to the dollar store that didn't open until 10am...and I didn't want to stand out in the blustery wind that kept me up all night.

Okay, okay. I"ll just have to remember the next time!

Fairy Update

What am I going to do when my kids start reading my blog!

This morning, Mck* came into my room asking me how to spell "dear." I spelled it to her and went back to sleep. So when I really woke up, I went into her room and asked her if she had talked to me in the morning. She said she had to write a note to the tooth fairy.

A few years ago, she and C* were riding bikes in the driveway and C* bumped her and her tooth got chipped. So now it's loose and she wanted to let the tooth fairy know. I'll have to type up that note tonight, after I can sneak in there and get it out. Does anyone have a good fairy font so our fairies and leave notes? haha

Fairies are taking over our house

Okay...I admit...I'm probably the one that is fostering this little myth of fairies that come and do and give at our house. A couple of summers ago, we went to Florida. Before the trip, I went to a Disney Store, bought a bunch of souvenirs and packed them to FL with us. Things are cheaper in the store than in FL...in Disney World. I would make sure I was the last to leave our suite. When we would arrive home in the evenings...mysteriously, Tinkerbell had left gifts for us on our pillows! Imagine that.

I detest making the bed. And so if my DH does it when I'm not around, I'll announce to him and the family, that the BED FAIRY came! And made the bed. Can you imagine? It has happened enough times that DD once my my bed and announced that the bed fairy had come and done it.

Then, C* took it into his head that if there are tooth fairies and bed fairies, there must be pokemon fairies. (Did I blog this already?) So I found out, one recent weekend when Ken was out of town, that C* had left a note on his night stand asking the pokemon fairy to please leave some cards for him. He wrote:

"Dear pokemon Fairy,

I am not greedy. I lost over 20 strong Pokemon cards and a mini pack has only 9. I want a mini pack. sinserly, CB*" (I left in the spelling for cuteness. hehe.) When I found out he had left a note...which was the 2nd one...for the pokemon fairy, and I had no way to get to the store without kids b/c there was no husband around, I told him that pokemon fairies are rarer than tooth fairies. So they don't come around every night. The next day was Saturday and I took the kids to the movies. We stopped at the drug store for some candies. Since it was raining, I had them "go into the car with the remote" while I "paid for these candies...I'll be right there." And I whipped out a hidden mini pack of cards. Later that night, with much nervousness, I exchanged the note for the mini pack of cards. Needless to say DS was super happy!

Then today, in the morning before church, I was working on something for Sunday School...we call it Primary...for future reference. And I needed a poster board. When I was looking through my closet, I came across some VW Beetle posters that I had gotten when #1 was a toddler. My kids are bonkers for "Herbie cars" and have to point them out whenever one is spied. So I put a poster on each kid's bed. Sat back down at my work table downstairs. The kids were eating and so I said in my Mommy voice..."when you're done eating, go upstairs and make your beds." That had to be a clue b/c I never or at least almost never ask them to make their beds. McK* found her poster and quickly called her her brothers to go upstairs to see what the CAR FAIRY left them.

Well, I nearly got caught on that one...she was testing me. And whatever answer I gave wasn't the right one. I am pretty sure she knows who these fairies are. But she wants to play and believe in them. So I will. Earlier today, she made a comment about the pokemon fairy. I again said, "There are less Pokemon fairies. They don't come to your house every day." And promptly forgot about it.

A few minutes ago, I thought I'd go to bed. First, I stopped to tuck everyone in bed. My DD was still in her dress and as I helped the sleeping girl out of it...I noticed she had left a note. Spread out on her night stand was about 10 cards. The note read,

"Dear Pokemon card Fairy,

you can trade with me with the cards on this desk. Love McK*"

So, I got out my stash of cards...is she going to recognize my cards? Slipped back into the pig sty of a room...Can there be any more barbies/clothes/things/books/toys on the floor. Prayed that she wouldn't wake up...holding my breath...and made a few trades "with the cards on this desk." I left an extra trainer card...sparkly one...and took the sweet note.

I sure hope there are fairies in Ohio. I already told her that I'm sure there are Hawaiian fairies. Guess I need to get a new deck of Pokemon cards so that they won't catch on to cards they know that I already have.

Barbie and Fairy Clothes

So, I'm finally giving DD a bday party and she wanted it to be a Barbie party. We asked all the little girls to bring their favorite Barbie dressed in her least favorite outfit. I had planned on making felt barbie outfits for each doll that the girl could beautify with glitter glue, sequins, studs and rhinestones. But since we used Fairy invites, Fairy plates, Fairy noise makers, Fairy gift bags, Fairy party favors, I decided to design a fairy outfit for the girls to decorate. Luckily I had plenty of felt and other material for the wings.

My DD and her friend T** insisted that the girls would only like pink or purple outfits. So this gold fairy is the reject/example. I asked DH to take a picture of it and somehow it became a pix of DD holding the doll. All the same, I'll snap a better picture later. She LOVES this outfit and was ready to decorate one today. The outfit is surprisingly simple to make, now that I worked out the kinks. I told my mom that everyone was getting one of these doll outfits for Christmas...everyone...the kids, adults...with some glitter glue so they can decorate their own outfit.

I made the wings out of silver lamay and stiff lacy material that was left over from a Halloween costume a few years ago. The top is altered from a Barbie pattern. The skirt is basically petal shaped pieces sewn to a 5.5 inch long, 1 inch wide grossgrain ribbon. I used Velcro for the fastenings. And fray check is a must...so you don't have to sew all those pesky tiny edges!

Magical Childhood Moments

Late last night, the loose tooth that my daughter had been wiggling in her mouth for days, popped out! It was a pretty exciting moment since it was her first tooth to come out. She showed it to all of us and then we put it in a special wooden box. (It was the same wooden box that I had given my parents with a tiny baby inside, announcing that I was expecting my first child. Just like my mom had done years before for her own mother.) We put the wooden box on her desk by her jewelry box so that the tooth fairy would find it near the other important treasures.

My daughter is dear and sweet and unfortunately lives in an age where magical childhood moments are infrequent and die away rather quickly. Just last spring, she was already on to the Easter Bunny. I think I steered her back into childhood make believe.

Fairies are dear and special and fun. Luckily she still believes in them and plays along with them too. For instance, a Christmas Elf comes to our house every December 1 with a letter reminding us that he is going to be watching us duirng the day. At night, he will report back to Santa on what was done and said that day. The next morning, the kids gleefully run about the house trying to find the Elf's new lookout. A few general reminders are given in the letter: don't touch me, choose the right, obey your parents. It's a great month!

We have some house fairies too. I rarely, very rarely, make my bed. On occasion, my DH will do it. Then I'll exclaim, "Wow! The Bed Fairy made my bed!" My daughter has figured out this fairy. A couple of weeks ago, she came to me announcing that the Bed Fairy had made my bed. I could see the excited gleam in her eyes when she confided in me that she was the Bed Fairy.

So in the life of a child, at least my child, I am so glad there are these magical moments...Moments that I am trying to keep alive as long as I can in my kids' lives.
