Math Olympian Champion

This school year has been a struggle for me and my oldest son. He is in a situation at school where the atmosphere of the classroom is most unpleasant.  Sadly, it took me a while to figure out what was happening. And once I did, wow...the stories are coming in!

So...with less than five weeks left...today was the celebration for Math Olympians.  C* signed up and stuck with it through the entire year. In fact, it was probably the saving grace of this 4th grade year.  Today, I took him and the other 2 kids to McDonald's for the awards ceremony.  McD's was their sponser so each kid got a burger, fries, drink and sundae.  Then the awards were presented.

Drum roll please...

Perfect Attendance Medal:  My son, CB*!
Participation Medal: My son, CB*!
Patch for Earning at least 9 points: My son, CB*!

Then came the trophies.  It was announced that this year, two people tied for first place.  The two faculty who ran the after school program had decided to honor the third and second place Math Olympians as well as the two First Place Olympians.  Third Place went to a 5th grade girl.  Second place went to a 5th grade girl.  And tying for FIRST PLACE....with another 5th grade girl.....MY SON, CB*!!!

I just knew it.  Just one of those funny things that mothers know.  When they started explaining the trophies, I had this feeling that my son was the big time winner. It wasn't wishful thinking. I just sat there, in that crowded McDonald's, knowing and smiling and waiting to have that confirmation.   I know what a difficult year it has been. I know how capable and kind and thoughtful he is...so very often.  (Just last night, when I brought home new bed sheets for him, after fretting over what color he'd like...his response was "I LOVE IT!"  I'm sure that was for me and not neccessarily b/c he was that in love with caramel colored bed sheets.)   He was so happy to get each medal and then the patch. Later he said that when the announcements were being made and each name was that of a 5th grader, he figured he didn't have a chance.  But boy, was he jazzed to be able to say that he had beat out all the 4th grade boys and girls and the 5th grade boys for this honor!  (And he will add that he beat out most of the 5 grade girls too.  haha...well...he only tied one of them, the rest he beat!)

I am so grateful for such a great son who has learned a lot from this year...and it wasn't just math!

hooray. and thanx so much for calling me and telling me all about it. papa says, 'good for you'. We are all thrilled and moreso because of how you've handled yourself under the trying year with a teacher who needs to get out of town.

We have a genius on our hands! Congrats to you-know-who.I have noticed, in the few times we do interact, that he does have that caring nature that you described.

Way to go!
