Name Updates
Since my last installment on "names," this is what I found out.
My dad chose all the names for the girls in our family. Somehow they decided early on that dad would name the girls and mom would name the boys. This just proves how patient my mom is. She had 4 girls...and then a boy. Wow...she waited 9 years to name a baby! haha.
I on the other hand, pretty much named the my kids. Of course my husband vetoed plenty of great names. But mostly, I got my choice through. (Except for #3's middle name. But even then....We had "named" him Chase Evan once we found out he was going to be a boy. Then when he came out and I got a look at him, I didn't want it to be Chase. So I changed his name. So, I guess in my little family, my husband is patient...at least some of the time! hehe.)
Here's another funny things about what the kids call me. They do call me Mom, Mommy or Mamma...and even Princess Aurora at times. But DS #1, when writing something to me, always addresses me as "Dawn." So this week, he had to fill out a form at school reminding me about parent/teacher conferences. The form said something like: "Dear _____________, " Then it went on and had places to fill in the date and time. But it was worded as if it were coming from the student and the student filled out his name at the bottom. Well, #1 son filled in "Dear Dawn," And his teacher asked me about it. I had to explain that C* is very respectful and always calls me Mom but when he writes me a note, it is always "Dawn." That is just a quirky, fun thing he has always done. (I left out the Princess Aurora thing...too complicated.)
Oh, and one more word about my name. If I had been a boy, my name would be "Nathan Robert." A name that always sounded really great. I just loved any "Nathan" that I met. I thing my parents chose very well! Thanks Robert and Susan...hehe.

My new hangout
I used to stalk the daily challenges on Splitcoast. But about a week ago, I found a new place to linger.
"Pay it forward with your gently used stamp sets!"
It's great. Much better than posting a B/S/T list on the site and waiting and hoping to work out a deal with another stamper. You pay so much for stamps and everyone tends to want full "trade value." Full, as in...what they paid for it.
On this thread, you will see a list of what is available for Pay It Forward (PIF). If you want something, just post that you want it. If you are the first person...you get it. PM your information to the stamper and she will mail the stamp set to you for free. Then you must post a list of your own stamps that you are willing to PIF. A new stamper will then choose from your list....and you send them the stamp set.
I have made 7 PIFs so far. No flakers yet! I've received all my sets so far except the one coming from Canada (expected delays) and the one I nabbed yesterday. So far, everyone has been so kind and honest. I am going to make a Thank You card with each PIF set received...and mail it back to the sender. I think that will be a lot of fun!
Other rules are:
*Remember that others are really looking for SU or other "hot" stamp brands.
*All of your offers can not be random "grab bags." And they need to have attached pictures so that others see the stamp images.
*After 8 hours of no grabbing, the last stamper is asked to offer something else.
*Each time you nab, please offer something new on your list. Keeping the lists fresh keeps the game moving!
**NO FLAKERS. If you are a flaker...just don't bother.
I have recieved some fun looking sets. All Wrapped Up is one that I "always wanted, never bought." I snagged Border Builders b/c I thought DD would enjoy it. And now that I see it, I'm going to enjoy it too! I got a rubber mounted CTMH set for my mom...which I thought she'd enjoy.
If you are a stamper, you have sets that you have NO IDEA WHY you bought it. Or you thought it was good and then you and the images didn't click. Here's the place to nab and offer...PIF! (Or just hang out, cheer others on, and have some fun chat time!)

What's in a name...
What's in a name? My newly aquainted aunt posed this on her blog, Letters from Lin today. I started answering the question and realized my answer was pretty involved...so I moved it to my blog!
Well, If you know me, you know my name is Dawn Mercedes. Which is what I like better than any other name.
When my mom was in college, she had dated a boy who drove a Mercedes Benz. So when she was going to marry my dad, he promised her a Mercedes one day too.

Soon I came along...thus the Mercedes. I have always been their one and only Mercedes.
I think Dawn is from a friend of theirs...not sure on why they picked it. Maybe it just sounded good.

Growing up, I didn't like "Dawn Hatch" too much. It was too short. Plop, plop. My sisters all had very unique and unusal names for the time. Their names seemed much more interesting than mine. (But, boy, did all the boys love it when they found out what my middle name was...hehe.)
Later I grew more confident and took on "Mercedes" as my first name for about a year. I guess sort of the same reason Aunt Lin did. I was at a cross roads in my life. I needed a change and a break. A BIG change and a BIG break. A new name can do it for you every time. In fact, when my kids were younger and forever calling "mommy." One day, I told them I wasn't "mommy." I was Princess Aurora. So then there were times, that if they needed me attention, they'd call me "Princess Aurora." It could get my attention quicker and make the situation lighter/easier to bear. (Maybe that is why we like most nicknames. Through them we can become someone a little different. A little more tough, a little more althetic, a little more endearing.)
I was Mercedes when my husband met me. But as soon as he came to my parents' home and found out that my name was really Dawn, I was back to being Dawn again. (And maybe I should have insisted on being Mercedes. Just maybe.)
I think that given the choice, I might like to be just Mercedes. If I were to need a big change in my life again, you can bet that my name would go back to being Mercedes. Being Mercedes meant that I could be a different persona. Dawn is responsible and reliable and does what should be done. Mercedes is stronger, more sparkly, more umph. Now, I'm Dawn Mercedes online...and I'm pleased with that. It's a good balance. Again, if you really know me, then you know my name.

You're super!
It's Tuesday again. That means it is time for a new STEE challenge! STEE04's challenge is to make a card that you can give to someone to boost their spirits or to say that you care! But preferably, it should be a fun, funky, upbeat style. Here is my submission:

Also, DD is sick home from school. I'm not sure that she's super sick. But she woke up, asked to stay home and then didn't get ready at all for school. She was told that she would spend the day in bed and she was fine to do so. Later she said she wasn't sick, she just ached all over. Hopefully it will be a quick sickness. Plus, in our family, if you have perfect attendance, you get to go out to eat with mom or dad, alone. Last year, McK* was the only one who earned it! We had a nice lunch at Applebee's one day while a friend watched the boys.
Today being Tuesday is also the day that Dawn from DawnsStampingThoughts counts her blessings. Thankful Tuesdays. Dawn is a blogger friend who could be a real life friend b/c she only lives a few miles over.
Today she posted a picturesque thought:
You do know Familes are like Bras .. Close to your heart and always there for support :-)
If you grew up in my family, then you'd say:
"You do know Families are like flopper stoppers..."
I guess that was my Dad's way of being discrete with a house full of girls! (Edited: My Mom called them "over the shoulder boulder holders.)

I feel like I'm running out of time these days. And 1/2 of the things I need to do slip by without being done! A lot of it is b/c each year, I try to get all of my Christmas gift shopping/making out of the way by Thanksgiving...Which seems to be early this year.
tick, tock, tick, tock...
Okay, enough of a break...back to the gift making!

Pay It Forward Players
Okay...here are the first two responders to the Pay It Forward game:
Lorie of Live, Laugh, Love, Create
and
Melissas of What do you (th)ink?
I'll be getting your treats out to you on Tuesday since tomorrow is a postal holiday. (Sorry, Aunt Lin. You were a few minutes too late.)
BTW, my friend Ellie loved the gift set. I gave it to her just before church started. She oohed and aahed over it all...showing it to the woman who was sitting in the pew behind her. I said, "You've spoiled me, so I want to spoil you." Once I get my hands on some of those ellusive large paper clips sold at Walmart...I'll make her a cute collection of decorative clips!
