Booing and teaching

We have just arrived home from booing our friends that live on the other side of town. What a fun adventure! Not only did we drive through the coming home traffic, we had to case the house. Our friends live on a corner of a road that is a circle. So, I drove by the house, showing the kids where I'd drop them off...the side/back of the house. I instructed them to go to the front door...and explained that I'd be parked a couple of houses down the road...and said "run to the car...through the grass." (My kids have this thing about walking on sidewalks...guess they didn't grow up in Sheffield Lake!)

So as I was explaining this, driving around the house, the DD who is 7 was sitting on the front porch with a friend! So I circled around the block. This time, slowing down on the side looking to see if the side door had a doorbell or if it looked like a door that someone MIGHT answer. Kept driving...decided that we'd make the drop off on the side door. So, 3rd time around...and yes, the little girl and friend are on right in front of that side door! I keep driving to the front of the house, drop off my son and pull up just past the neighbor's yard. My son takes the goodies to the front door, puts it down (yes, he's a natural), rings the doorbell and dashes back to the car...into the open front seat and we pull away. But not fast enough to see someone in the family come out and find the goodies!

(On a side note, we passed a woman walking her dog like 5 times...she probably thought we were casing the neighborhood or extremely lost! hehe.)

As we were driving home, C* asked if he could have a reward for dropping off the goodies. (Especially since the other siblings were too afraid to go.) *ding, ding, ding* A TEACHING MOMENT. "No." I said. Then went on to explain that the world will teach him that doing good deserves a tangible reward. A trip to the treasure chest, candy, privileges... But it is more important to know that the Lord is happy with his actions. I told him that good feeling that he was feeling inside was something to remember. The reward is doing service for others.

So while our friends enjoy a treat, my family got to enjoy the sweet peace of serving others and knowing that doing a good turn is the right thing to do.

Daddy Longleg Controversary

We had a daddy longleg controversary at our house. On Sunday, I sent M* and her dad up to the computer room to find a spider to do her report on. The Daddy Longleg came up. C* announced that a Daddy Longleg was NOT a spider. I asked my husband to double check. So the two filled out the paper on the daddy longleg spider.

Monday rolls around and M* comes home fussy. She had watched a movie and a Daddy Longleg is NOT a spider...so she learned. Tuesday morning comes and I'm googling DaddyLongleg sites. It's questionable. By the end of the morning, I decided that non-biologists tend to call several species of bugs by the generic name of "daddy longlegs." True Daddy Longlegs are arachnids but NOT spiders. There is, of course, a Daddy Longleg Spider. Although my husband insisted she could still present the report as is...I said, "No. She would have to defend that thinking to her teacher. And she is too young."

It is now Wednesday...yes...I've posted a lot today. But right now, she is working on a new spider report...on the Cellar Spider. And then it hit me. The worksheet she has to fill out never saids the word spider...calls everything an arachnid. But describes them in terms as a spider.

So, actually, the teacher is wrong. If we were base the project on an "Arachnid," then any daddy longlegs is absolutely correct. But the teacher is looking for a spider.

She should have used the word SPIDER...not arachnid. B/c there are arachnids that are not spiders.

Controversary settled...play the blame game. hehe.

But now DD is done and we have to go to the dollar store to buy "stuff" to make a 3d model.

Edited: The dollar store was a bust. But we were creative and here is McK's Cellar Spider.

E*'s Spaceship

Just as I sat down to post the previous tutorial, my son came up to me with much excitement. He said, "I made this for you!" as he brandished this amazine spaceship on his hand.

E* went on to explain that his hand could fit inside the well stapled and folded paper ship. After sliding it on your hand, you walk around to make it fly. He instructed me that if I wanted to go right, I should put the space ship on my right hand. And if I wanted to left, to switch hands.

What a clever little, I mean big, boy. Someone posted the question and asked me if my boys were crafty too. Here is a fine example of their craftiness!

A treat for Savannah Stamper...

My big sis this DSS round is a friendly stamper named Savannah...Savannah Stamper. hehe. At least that is her alias! The other day she sent me a package filled with treats...sweet treats for all 3 kids and sweets and supplies for MOI!

Since she is so tricky, and doesn't use her return address, I can not send her an occasional card back! The following tutorial is a treat for Savannah Stamper. She asked for directions and here is a tutorial! (I got a card like this from Mybearybest on SCS.)

Pop Up Card

Start off with a piece of card stock: 4.25 x 11 inches.

Stamp as you wish.

Score CS as shown. Score at: 1", 2.75", 3.75", 5.5", 7.25", 8.25", 10".

Your paper should look like this.

Using a ruler and exacto knife, cut a slim rectangle out in the center of the paper. Leave a little more than a quarter inch on either side. You may want to apply some scotch tape to reinforce this thin area.

Create your center piece...the piece that will POP out of the card. It's dimensions should be no larger than 3.25"x 5.5".

On the long piece of card stock, apply sticky strip or use your ATG gun.

Crease your score lines. Apply the middle panel as shown above.

Then as you fold up the long piece, slide the decorated panel through the slit.

A side view for those visual crafters!

Keep folding the long card stock so that a box is formed. The end sections fold up...inside of the box. They hold the center panel.

Bottom view.

Add finishing touches to you card.

This card can be flattened and it will then fit into a standard size envelope.

K-notes

We got home from soccer pretty late last night. Sine we hadn't been home since 2:45, there was a lot to get done before bed time.

I was walking around the house and I saw this:

My husband must have learned a lesson from DD and he left me several "I (heart) DM" all around the house. I found one in the computer room and one in my bedroom last night too.

But then this morning...the kids were a flurry of excitement. Turns out...my husband told them that there are 11-12 of these notes all around the house. He even gave them some hints to their locations. I found one in the spice cabinent in the kitchen.
One in the washing machine.

And one on the front window of the house, facing out. That one did not go unnoticed by our dear little neighbor girl. She asked her mom why we had a heart on our house. hehe.

While it is not unknown that my marriage is by far the hardest thing that I deal with in my life, finding these heart notes was a nice gesture from my husband. Now...the kids did tell me that there are 2 in the boys' room...up high...though I looked and I didn't see anything yet!

Soccer

If you know me, then you know I'm not althetic. But tonight I was! It was C*'s last soccer practice. Traditionally, his coach has a scrimmage...parents vs. kids! Not only was I the only mom to participate...I was the goalie!

I did pretty well. I made 3 saves the kids made 3 goals on me. So I guess I'm middle of the road? haha. One parent took a great pix of the team after one of the games this year and then kindly made copies for all of the players.

The team called themselves "Cheetahs." That's MY Cheestah in the middle...the one with the goalie jersey on. He's a much better goal keeper than I am too!

The bestest DD!!

So, yes, I do tell my DD that she is the best girl on her soccer team even though there are no other girls on the team. And I tell her that she is my favorite girl even though she only has brothers. But seriously...My DD is the bestest DD in the world.

This evening, I came home from a Cub Scout meeting to find this on my bedroom door. I know she has been working on them for a couple of days now.

(A few close ups so you can admire her handiwork and creativity!)

A few minutes ago, I went into my room to get ready for bed and this is what I saw on my nightstand.

Isn't she adorable and sweet and spectacular!! Good thing I have already a special treat for her lunch box tomorrow!!

Muddy Thanks

I'm sure that when my friend Judy reads this, she is going to giggle. On Friday night, I stamped 3 Thanksgiving cards. After I was all done, I looked and them. Really LOOKED at them. And here is what I saw...

Can you see what is wrong wih them? I bet Judy can. Yep...that's right...they are all muddy brown! haha. Lately, the color combo challenges seem to be muddy brown, off brownn and light brown. Or they are brown, brown and muddy blue. Or brown, brown and green. Not my sort of color scheme!

So I had to chuckle when I saw that I had made some muddy thanksgiving cards! Muddy thanks to you for stopping by today!
